Temporomandibular joint osseous morphology in a consecutive sample of ankylosing spondylitis patients

Article Abstract:

Patients with ankylosing spondylitis appear more likely to have degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joint than healthy persons. The temporomandibular joint is the hinge of the jaw. Researchers took histories, examined, and took temporomandibular-joint X rays in 65 patients with ankylosing spondylitis and compared results with 22 healthy volunteers. Bony abnormalities were more common in the ankylosing spondylitis group. The likelihood of bone erosions increased with length of time with the disease. Patients with erosions were more likely to have neck complaints and dislocation of the joint between the first two vertebrae of the neck.

Abnormal autonomic cardiovascular control in ankylosing spondylitis

Article Abstract:

This study found a relationship between ankylosing spondylitis (AS), an inflammation affecting the vertebra, and abnormalities in the autonomic control of the heart beat. Those in whom the AS was most inflamed seemed to have the highest level of irregularity.
