Transvaginal ultrasonography of the endometrium in women with postmenopausal bleeding: is it always necessary to perform an endometrial biopsy?

Article Abstract:

An endometrial biopsy may not be necessary in women with postmenopausal bleeding if an ultrasound scan shows their endometrium is 4 millimeters thick or less. In a study of 163 women, 0.6% of those in this category had endometrial cancer compared to 20 of the women whose endometrium was 5 millimeters or thicker.

Factors associated with endometrial thickness and uterine size in a random sample of postmenopausal women

Article Abstract:

Some of the risk factors for endometrial cancer can also cause the lining of the uterus to become thicker and can also affect the size of the uterus. These risk factors include hormone therapy, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes. The thickness of the uterine lining is sometimes used to diagnose endometrial cancer.

Can ultrasound replace dilation and curettage? A longitudinal evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding and transvaginal sonographic measurement of the endometrium as predictors of endometrial cancer

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on postmenopausal bleeding and endometrial cancer' transvaginal sonographic measurement. Results demonstrate that postmenopausal bleeding incurs a 64-fold increase rink for endometrial cancer.
