Canal adaptation and coronal leakage: lateral condensation compared to Thermafil

Article Abstract:

Root canal fillings that are condensed and compacted may adapt to the canal space and seal it more effectively than the Thermafil system. The Thermafil system uses a solid metal or plastic core surrounded by rubbery material to fill the root canal. Researchers filled the root canals in 60 extracted teeth using the Thermafil system, lateral condensation, or lateral condensation and vertical compaction. Investigators exposed the teeth to artificial saliva and dye to evaluate the surface-to-root leakage. The volume and depth of dye leakage was greatest in the root canals that were filled using the Thermafil system and least in the canals filled via the lateral condensation and vertical compaction technique. The lateral condensation plus vertical compaction technique allowed significantly less leakage than the Thermafil system in uppermost, middle, and deepest levels of the root canal.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus

Article Abstract:

A case of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), a common cancer of the nasal sinuses, salivary glands and nearby tissues, is presented. ACC represents 15% of cancers of the paranasal sinuses and, because diagnosis is often delayed, the prognosis is generally poor. A 61-year-old woman saw a doctor because of a mass on her palate and numbness of her face. She was treated with broad removal of the upper jaw and radiation therapy, but died following local recurrence of the tumor and spinal metastasis. A 50% 5-year-survival rate can be achieved with early diagnosis and aggressive, multimodal therapy.

Management of missing maxillary lateral incisors

Article Abstract:

A dentist reports his experience treating patients who have a missing incisor. Incisors are the front teeth that are used to bite off pieces of food. A space can be created for inserting a crown or existing teeth can be used to fill in the gap. Which technique is used depends on the size and shape of existing teeth, asthetics, and how the technique will affect the function of the teeth.
