Capitation: for better or worse

Article Abstract:

The move toward capitated medical payments, a concept born along with managed care, was probably an inevitable reality check after the era of unrestrained medical costs. The 1970s and 1980s were medicine's golden age, when specialization and technology inflated medical fees, and insurance reimbursement for these was unrestricted. Health care reform requires medical professionals to be true clinicians. Other ways of keeping down medical costs include tort reform and persuading patients to have healthier lifestyles.

Diabetes mellitus: current treatments and future prospects

Article Abstract:

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is genetically transmitted and is caused by the body's failure to produce insulin, while Type 2 is also hereditary and is due to the body's resistance to its own insulin. Diabetics who depend on insulin injections must strictly control their diet and exercise to prevent organ damage and death. Type 2 diabetics suffer few immediate consequences from failing to treat their disease and often become obese. Intense insulin therapy and cell implantation offer promising treatment results.

A matter of life

Article Abstract:

Americans must consider behavioral and sexual responsibility as a possible solution to the controversial and divisive issue of abortion. Abortions are a legitimate medical procedure and cannot be outlawed but a reduction in the number of abortions performed can be achieved with a shift in attitudes about sex. Abstinence or sex only within a monogamous relationship can reduce the risks of both disease and unwanted pregnancies.
