Care in a cold climate

Article Abstract:

Many Afro-Caribbean nurses joined the UK National Health Service (NHS) when it was first established in 1948, although they were often discriminated against and found it hard to progress through promotion. These nurses made an important contribution to the NHS which is often overlooked, delegates were told at a meeting of the West Indian Standing Conference (WISC) held in April 1998. The WISC was established in 1958 to help immigrants settle into a new way of life in the UK. Ethnic minorities make up 6.6% of staff in the NHS, but few have reached senior levels within the organisation.

Sense and sexuality

Article Abstract:

Delegates at the 1998 Royal College of Nursing conference voted overwhelmingly for the development of guidelines to help them define the nursing role concerning the sexuality of patients. Nurses must address issues concerning sexuality in their patients despite any personal feelings including embarrassment or disgust. One case in which intervention proved necessary involved the teaching of masturbation to a patient who was causing injury and distress to himself, and to other patients, due to his lack of knowledge.
