Careers guidance during nurse education: The need for a strategy

Article Abstract:

There is a lack of clear careers guidance for nurses despite recommendations made during the past 25 years. There are fewer opportunities for advancement in the NHS as it removes layers of its organizational hierarchy A study of newly qualified nurses and senior health service staff found that there was no formal arrangement for providing careers guidance for students. Both newly qualified nurses and senior staff saw careers guidance in terms of its purpose, and problems identified included out of date careers information, lack of attention to individual concerns and the failure to recognize the problems in obtaining a first post.

How new nurses manage work and family responsibilities

Article Abstract:

Many nurses put their own careers as secondary to that of their partners and are likely to be impacted by the geographical demands of their partners' jobs, according to a study of 936 female nurses. Almost 25% of nurses who had children when they qualified preferred part-time work to full-time, with those nurses who plan to have children also seeking to return to part-time work. Nurses are downgraded when they return to part-time work. Nurses who do not interrupt their careers to have children are more likely to be promoted.

Modern studies

Article Abstract:

College-based nurse education courses have broken traditional hospital/student relationships. Closer links with higher education have resulted in more academically-orientated courses. College-based students on the Project 2000 course gain a wider perspective on nursing. They are concerned with community needs rather than hospital needs.
