Equity in physician compensation: the Marshfield experiment

Article Abstract:

The salary equalization scheme developed in the Marshfield clinic, WI, fostered harmony among doctors and set a precedent for excellence in the practice of medicine. However, the scheme failed, due to the changing economic situation and its simplistic approach, which ignored productivity, ability, educational background and risks of practice in compensation calculations. The recently developed resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) considered such factors. However, the concept of fee limitations raised apprehensions among medical practitioners. Despite this, the situation should foster unity among medical professionals.

Learning from our patients: one participant's impact on clinical trial research and informed consent

Article Abstract:

An essay by a patient with cancer named George Zimmer who participated in preliminary drug research studies has influenced how these studies are performed. Zimmer's suggestions included allowing study participants to combine drugs or increase their concentration to possibly achieve the desired result and encouraging study designers to acknowledge the reasons patients participate in these studies. Preliminary studies have allowed patients, with informed consent, to increase drug concentrations. Other studies have also been done to analyze patient motivation and understanding of the study's purpose.
