Carotid-artery intima and media thickness as a risk factor for myocardial infarction and stroke in older adults

Article Abstract:

The thickness of the carotid artery intima and media may predict which people will have a heart attack or stroke. The intima and media are the inner layers of the carotid arteries. Researchers used ultrasound to measure the carotid artery intima and media in 4,476 people with no history of heart disease who were then followed for several years. The rate of heart attack or stroke was about four times higher in those with the thickest intima and media compared to those with the thinnest.

Treatment of periodontitis and endothelial function

Article Abstract:

A study investigates the effect of treatment of severe periodontitis on endothelial function. Evidence suggests that intensive periodontal treatment results in acute, short-term systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, but six moths after therapy, the benefits in oral health are associated with improvement in endothelial function.

Risk of myocardial infarction and stroke after acute infection or vaccination

Article Abstract:

The risks of myocardial infarction and stroke after common vaccinations and naturally occurring infections are studied by undertaking within-person comparisons. The results provide support for the concept that acute infections are associated with a transient increase in the risk of vascular events.
