Case 9-2004: an 18-year-old man with respiratory symptoms and shock

Article Abstract:

A description of a patient who reported headache, stiff neck, pleuritic chest pain, and increasing myalgias in his back on the morning of admission to the hospital is given. The patient was pronounced dead and the microbiology laboratory reported the detection of influenza A antigen in a nasal swab obtained on the previous day.

A case study is presented of a 17-year-old boy with fever and nodules in the liver and spleen. The tests conducted for the purpose of diagnosis and the discussion leading to the patient being diagnosed with hepatitis are described.
