Cervical incompetence and preterm delivery

Article Abstract:

Premature birth remains a serious problem partly because obstetricians have no accurate way of identifying women at high risk for giving birth early. A recent study has found that the odds of premature birth went up with shorter cervical length. Short cervical length was not a sufficiently accurate predictor of premature birth to make it clinically useful, but this finding suggests that cervical competence plays an important role in premature birth and more attention should be paid to it when researching the causes and cures of premature birth. Even so, other obstacles to lowering the premature birth rate would remain. The causes of premature labor are varied and complex, risk factors do not reliably discriminate women at high risk, and we lack effective treatment to suppress labor.

Chemoprevention of prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

Prostate Cancer Trial has provided the first firm evidence that this cancer can be prevented by a relatively nontoxic oral agent. Additional agents, many of which are antioxidants with antiandrogenic effects, are being tested in large clinical trials and it is likely that additional ongoing molecular studies would identify new molecular targets and agents that may also be effective.
