Changes in dietary intake during a 6-year follow-up of an older population

Article Abstract:

People aged over 70, especially women, are developing healthier eating habits, according to the Mosgiel Community Study of Nutrition and Health, undertaken among residents of Mosgiel, New Zealand, aged over 70. This six-year study showed a decrease in saturated fat consumption and a rise in polyunsaturated fat consumption in women. This seems to be a time effect. There was no age-related rise in total dietary fibre intake in men or women, but intakes rose in both the longitudinal and time-sequential analysis, indicating a time effect.

COMA dietary reference values and the elderly

Article Abstract:

Dietary reference values (DRV) are statistical estimates which correlate with the dietary needs of the different age and sex groups within a certain population. In the elderly, DRVs are formulated on the basis of a key functional parameter for each nutrient need to be identified as well as an optimal level of function for the parameter. This is followed by the application of the parameter in community studies to define the range and distribution of nutrient intakes within each age and group.

Variation in nutrient intake with dental status, age and odour perception

Article Abstract:

Elderly people having poor odor perception show lower food intake as compared to those with good odor perception. A significant effect of odor perception is seen on water intake in the subjects. Age and dental state may also have a role in food intake habits in elderly people who have other risk factors. However, odor perception and dental state cannot account fully for the variation in nutrient intake in elderly people.
