Cheap labour?

Article Abstract:

The use of long-term unemployed 'employment trainees' as nursing auxiliaries in some hospitals has sparked off considerable protests. Many existing hospital staff believe that the trainees are being very poorly paid, and unions are requesting that the trainees receive the same payment as ordinary auxiliary nurses. There are fears that the use of such trainees could increase as trust hospitals seek to cut wage costs, and this could have serious implications for standards of patient care.

Second-class citizens?

Article Abstract:

Few opportunities exist for Enrolled Nurses to improve their status by upgrading their qualifications although career opportunities are diminishing. State Enrolled Nurses originally developed as a cheaper alternative to State Registered Nurses. However, EN appointments have declined due to restrictions on their role. ENs have been recognised as a cheap, experienced workforce suitable for countering the supernumerary status of student nurses.

Job shortage hits crisis point

Article Abstract:
