Chemotherapy with preoperative radiotherapy in rectal cancer

Article Abstract:

The effect of addition of chemotherapy to preoperative radiotherapy and the use of postoperative chemotherapy in the treatment of T3 or T4 resectable rectal cancer is examined. It is concluded that adding fluorouracil-based chemotherapy preoperatively or postoperatively to rectal cancer patients treated with preoperative radiotherapy has no significant effect on survival, but chemotherapy provides a significant benefit to local control regardless of timing.
