Choosing your first post

Article Abstract:

Newly-qualified nurses considering the choice of their first post should be aware that it is the foundation of their future career. They will find their first post particularly helpful if it has the support of an experienced staff nurse working as a preceptor. Nurse should consider what a post has to offer them, and whether they are suited to the environment. Opting for the private sector poses few problems, but the specialist environment may not be a wise choice, as moving out of the specialism at a later stage would mean a drop in grade at a time when finances are often important.

Creative job searching

Article Abstract:

Creative job searching means locating and being in a good position to apply for the best career opportunities. Nurses should talk to people about potential vacancies, look at notice boards, read nursing journals and newspapers, send in speculative applications to a preferred employer and use the Internet to search for jobs. It is important to be flexible about what to apply for. Going on an informal visit and writing to thank the appropriate person also creates a good impression. Manners, punctuality, and neatness are also important.

On top form

Article Abstract:

Nursing and midwifery students would benefit from a specialist careers service to help them prepare for the work market. One way of providing such a service is to create a nursing and midwifery careers adviser post within a university careers advisory service (CAS), as the University of Sheffield CAS has done. The specialist nursing careers adviser there gives lectures and advice on areas including professional development, interview techniques, job searching and application forms.
