Chronic conditions, functional limitations, and special health care needs of school-aged children born with extremely low-birth-weight in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Neurosensory, developmental, and medical conditions together with the associated functional limitations and special health care needs of extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) children compared with normal-birth-weight (NBW) term-born children are examined. Findings reveal that the ELBW survivors in school at age 8 years who were born during the 1990s period have considerable long-term health and educational needs.

Young adult attainments of preterm infants

Article Abstract:

Comparison of extremely low-birth weight (ELBW) infants and very low birth weight infants with the term born children is presented. Studies of these late adolescents and young adults have reported poorer physical abilities, higher mean blood pressure, poorer respiration function, and more anxiety and depression for VLBW and ELBW young adults.

Perinatal Brain Injury in Preterm Infants and Later Neurobehavioral Function

Article Abstract:

MRI scans of the brains of children who were born prematurely show that parts of their brains are smaller than normal. This might explain the developmental disabilities that these children often have and indicates that the brain can be adversely affected during critical periods throughout pregnancy.
