Clinical and genetic studies of renal cell carcinomas in a family with a constitutional chromosome 3;8 translocation: genetics of familial renal carcinoma

Article Abstract:

The loss of a tumor suppressor gene on chromosome three may precede the development of one form of familial, or hereditary, kidney cancer. The loss may occur when genetic material is exchanged between one copy of chromosome three and one copy of chromosome eight, a process called translocation. The resulting translocation would place the tumor suppressor gene on chromosome eight. Among five members of the same family who were in remission from kidney cancer, three underwent genetic analysis of kidney cancer cells after suffering a recurrence. The translocated copy of chromosome eight was no longer present in cancer cells from all three patients. The translocated copy of chromosome three and the normal copies of chromosome three and eight were still present. All the patients who were in remission suffered a recurrence of kidney cancer within one to 16 years of their first episode. Three died and two went into remission after treatment.

Ethnic variation as a key to the biology of human disease

Article Abstract:

Two studies have highlighted the differences that race can make in biological responses. One study found that blood vessels of adult smokers living in southern China respond differently to stimulation than white adult smokers. This may partly explain some differences in heart disease rates seen in these two populations. Another study found that Asian men carrying a mutated gene have higher acetaldehyde blood levels but not alcohol levels after drinking alcohol. This may partly explain the response to alcohol seen in some Asian men. However, most studies indicate that people of all races have similar genetic markers.
