What is internal medicine?

Article Abstract:

A physician describes the field of internal medicine. A career in internal medicine involves working closely with patients and their families and working closely with nursing personnel. It is a hands-on application of science in caring for patients. Internists consult for surgeons and family practitioners and teach new doctors. Internal medicine is thought by some to lack intellectual challenge and by others to be too broad and impossible to master. Specialization, however, ignores the whole patient and may establish arbitrary subdivisions that do not meet patients' needs. In choosing a career in internal medicine, doctors should remember why they entered medical school in the first place and realize that true prestige comes from within a person.

From the double helix to genomic medicine

Article Abstract:

Much has been learned about the genetic defects behind some diseases since Watson and Crick first published the structure of DNA in 1953. Scientists now know the sequence of the entire human genome, which will make it much easier to identify genetic defects. In addition, researchers are developing DNA vaccines that could be used instead of gene therapy.
