Importance of adenomas 5 mm or less in diameter that are detected by sigmoidoscopy

Article Abstract:

People who have colorectal polyps 5 millimeters (mm) or less should receive follow-up colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer. Researchers performed colonoscopy in 203 patients who had been diagnosed with precancerous polyps after a flexible sigmoidoscopy. Precancerous polyps were found in 29% of those with polyps 5 mm or less, 29% of those with polyps between 6 and 10 mm and 57% of those with polyps greater than 10 mm. Six percent of the patients with polyps 5 mm or less had colorectal cancer or an advanced stage of a precancerous condition.

Choosing between clinical prediction rules

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine the accuracy of two clinical prediction rules for identifying trauma patients who have a low risk of neck injury and therefore do not need a neck X-ray. The two rules are the Canadian C-Spine Rule (CCR) and the National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study (NEXUS) Low-Risk Criteria. Most doctors take a neck X-ray in all trauma patients but 96% of these X-rays show no injury.
