Clinical research and the NIH -- a report card

Article Abstract:

Two doctors who were members of the NIH Director's Panel on Clinical Research between 1995 and 1997 review the panel's recommendations and assess the changes within the NIH and the medical research community since 1995. Topics include spending for clinical research, the clinical-research portfolio, first-time applicants and their renewal rates, new clinical-research grants, reorganization of study sections, training in clinical research, educational-loan relief, and general clinical-research centers.

Clinical research to clinical practice -- lost in translation?

Article Abstract:

Doctors and professional medical associations and organizations can do more to ensure that the results of medical research are applied in the patient care setting. Doctors can encourage patients to modify certain lifestyle behaviors and prescribe appropriate drugs when necessary. Medical associations can develop practice guidelines and reward doctors who follow them.

A comprehensive registration of clinical trials or the public reporting of the results is emphasized. The effects of concealing negative data on medical practice, and the concerns about investigational products and the protection of research subjects are discussed.
