Clinical supervision: managing the resistance

Article Abstract:

Many nurses are opposed to the introduction of clinical supervision because they see it as way for management to control or find fault with their work. Nurses who are in favour of clinical supervision want it to be an informal process with their peers rather than with a superior staff member. For clinical supervision to be successful, it should not be mandatory to take part. It has to be accepted as a useful tool which gives support and eases the stress of everyday nursing and allows nurses to improve their skills. The supervisors need to be well trained and committed to it.

Care in the face of change

Article Abstract:

Student nurses on a Project 2000 learning disabilities training course at Sheffield University were asked about their views on leadership, autonomy, morale and how they saw the future of the learning disablity nurse. Most had traditional views on the hierarchy of leadership. Morale is low because of their lack of power and changes within the system. However team work, training and good staff ratios can counter this. Learning disability nurses must ensure that service providers value the skills they have if their profession is to survive the changes.
