Clonal vaccinia virsus grown in cell culture as a new smallpox vaccine

Article Abstract:

Smallpox has generated renewed interest in vaccination due to its potential bioterrorism. A experiment conducted with six cloned and one unclosed vaccine concluded that the vaccines were equivalent in their ability to produce major coetaneous reactions and to stimulate neutralizing antibody and cell-mediated immunity against vaccinia virus.

Quantification of antibody responses against multiple antigens of the two infectious forms of vaccinia virus provides a benchmark for smallpox vaccination

Article Abstract:

The antibody responses were quantified against several vaccinia virus (VAVC) surface antigens that were probable targets for antibodies, which contributed to protection against small pox. It is shown that it is very important to include the B5 protein in future small pox vaccine.

Keeping the lock on smallpox

Article Abstract:

Research efforts have declined and the vaccine is now outdated, since the eradication of natural smallpox infection. One study moves vaccine production from animals into tissue culture; another study examines duration of immunity in already vaccinated individuals.
