Coalition against guinea-worm

Article Abstract:

The international campaign to eradicate guinea-worm disease, also known as dracunculiasis, began in 1980. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offered technical help to affected countries and former US Pres Jimmy Carter and Pakistan leader Mohammad Zia ul-Haq championed the cause.

Technology aids eradication campaign

Article Abstract:

UNICEF and the World Health Organization formed the Joint Programme on Data Management and Mapping to provide technical assistance to public health officials trying to eradicate guinea-worm disease (dracunculiasis). The computer mapping allowed officials to target infected villages.

Guinea-worm eradication programme

Article Abstract:

Guinea-worm disease, also known as dracunculiasis, is transmitted to humans through a parasite in drinking water. A global effort to eradicate the disease began in 1980, and has achieved 97% success by Feb 1996. The number of cases fell from 3.5 million in 1986, to 8,000 in 1995.
