Cod and cold turkey

Article Abstract:

Ocean-going fishermen have always been heavy drinkers, but fishermen in Scotland are also increasingly using illegal drugs. Fishermen are attracted to drugs because they need relaxation from jobs which are hard and dangerous. They also have high levels of disposable income which makes drug purchase easier. The small fishing community of Fraserburgh in Scotland is known as Smack City due to its heroin trade. A local general practitioner, who says that 78% of the men on his surgery's drug register are fishermen, maintains that crack cocaine is also available in the town.
