Comfort of strangers

Article Abstract:

A care plan aimed to relieve the distress of an elderly woman dying of breast cancer. Nurses established a trusting relationship through which the patient expressed her fears. Pain relief was a priority. Regular dressing of the tumour aimed to control discharge and odour. The introduction of a balanced diet improved nutrition. However, work pressures limited psychological support and contact with a self-help group may have been beneficial. Patient control of pain relief would have increased comfort.

Teamwork in burn care

Article Abstract:

Burns-related injuries lead to more than 600 deaths among adults and children in the UK every year. However, new medical techniques and a multidisciplinary approach to the physical and psychological problems which can result from burn injuries mean that patient recovery is becoming increasingly satisfactory. A multidisciplinary approach can be very effective in ensuring holistic care after a serious burn injury. This can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social support.

Treating Mary's foot ulcer

Article Abstract:

Selecting a wound dressing product must only be undertaken after careful assessment of a patient. In the case of Mary, aged 76, Iodosorb cadexomer iodine gel was used to treat her infected foot ulcer. The gel absorbed slough, exudate and pus, and released iodine to prevent bacteria, which produce odour. No pain was felt when dressings were changed.
