Policy and program analysis using administrative databases

Article Abstract:

There appear to be several pitfalls to avoid when using electronic databases for health care policy analyses. Researchers should identify an independent and matched control group, thoroughly evaluate the quality and integrity of the data, control for biases in the participant pool, and restrict analyses to meaningful data. More conventional research methods should be used routinely to validate results obtained using database reviews. Some research studies do not lend themselves well to database reviews.

Linking automated databases for research in managed care settings

Article Abstract:

Electronic databases developed by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) may be a valuable, extensive, and accessible source of patient data for public health or academic researchers evaluating health care policy. Potential uses for this data include studies on treatment effectiveness, risk management, cost-effectiveness, disease patterns, or behavior dynamics. Cooperation between the HMO Research Network and other investigators may further streamline this research method.
