Computed tomography visceral adipose tissue volume measurements of Italians: predictive equations

Article Abstract:

The area measured at the second to third lumbar level best represents the total visceral adipose tissue (AT) volume in Italians. Computed tomography is used to obtain AT volume from the AT area of five scans and the distances between the scans. The waist circumference along with age efficiently predicts AT volume in men and pre-menopausal women, and in post-menopausal women when height is included. Participants in the study included 72 women and 18 men aged between 18 and 69 years. The results are largely consistent with those of other researchers.

Alcohol consumption, smoking habits and fat distribution in Italian men and women aged 20-60 years

Article Abstract:

A total of 601 patients, with 294 males and 307 females, participated in a study to evaluate the relationship between alcohol intake and smoking with antropometricmeasurements to signify body fat distribution. Results showed that cigarette smoking does not have any relationship with body fat distribution. Increased alcohol intake had a direct relationship with visceral fat distribution patternwith an increased supply of lipid and energy.

Cigarette smoking is associated with differences in nutritional habits and related to lipoprotein alterations independently of food and alcohol intake

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effects of cigarette smoking on serum lipid and lipoprotein levels taking into account the nutritional intakes. A case-control design was used to compare smokers and non-smokers. The results indicate an association between smoking and serum lipid/lipoprotein alterations independently of nutritional factors. Smokers also have less 'healthy' nutritional habits than non-smokers.
