Confidentiality and Privacy of Electronic Medical Records: Psychiatrists Explore Risks of the "Information Age"

Article Abstract:

The privacy rules authorized by the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act state that psychotherapy notes must be kept separate from the rest of a patient's medical records and can only be released to a third party if the patient signs a written consent form. It also exempts pyschotherapists from the requirement to show patients their medical records.
