Conflict-of-interest problems lead to policy changes

Article Abstract:

Conflict-of-interest problems related to genetic testing for Alzheimer disease (AD) have led to policy changes in rules at National Institutes of Aging (NIA), Harvard University, and Neurobiology of Aging (NoA), the Elsevier journal. Researchers reported favorably in NoA on use of biomarkers for genetic testing for AD, not disclosing some authors' financial relationships with a company, Athena Neurosciences that manufactures genetic test kits for the presenilin 1 gene and APOE, a gene linked to AD. The article was by a 24-member NIA working group. The Wall Street Journal printed a story questioning authors' disinterested status. The bioethics panel at Stanford University has concluded that genetic testing for AD is not appropriate outside research settings and that available genetic counseling is not adequate. The article did acknowledge some Athena support and the anonymous campaign against the researchers seems influenced by some commercial interest according to some.
