Confronting crises on the home front

Article Abstract:

The Birmingham Mental Health NHS Trust, UK, has developed a strategy for home-based care of the severely mentally ill. The system is based on 24-hour service by a team of 14 professionals, including nurses and social workers. The project focuses on crises in the mentally ill, providing medication and practical help where needed. It is cost-effective, and particularly appreciated by Asian members of the community who prefer to address mental illness in the family. The number of psychiatric hospital beds in the region has dropped from 44 to 23 during the project's three years of operation.

A nurse in agony

Article Abstract:

National newspaper agony aunt Linda Wolfe believes that her career in nursing prepared her well for her problem page work. Wolfe faced difficulties in her family life and problems in her professional relations during her early years as a hospital nurse but particularly enjoyed her seven years as a health visitor. Wolfe, who also works as a healthcare trust director and is mother to five children, is particularly keen to address the problems of teenagers in her problem page as she feels adults do not listen to them properly.

Labour health policy omits named nurse

Article Abstract:

Labour's health manifesto does not mention the named nurse initiative although nurses are in favour of the scheme. The health manifesto pledges include the termination of GP fundholding and the return of hospitals that have opted out to health authority control. It aims to target women in its staff development programme and would expect private companies to contribute to training investment.
