Myotonic dystrophy is a significant cause of idiopathic polyhydramnios

Article Abstract:

Women who are diagnosed with idiopathic polyhydramnios, a serious excess of amniotic fluid usually seen during the middle trimester of pregnancy, should have DNA testing done to look for the myotonic dystrophy mutation. Myotonic dystrophy is the most common form of muscular dystrophy among pregnant women and a frequent cause behind this condition. Of 67 patients diagnosed with idiopathic polyhydramnios, amniotic fluid was obtained from 41 and four of those showed the mutation, an incidence of 9.7% compared to a social incidence of .000125%

Prenatal screening for neural tube defects: a choice for all

Article Abstract:

Neural tube defects in the fetus may be detected optimally during the 16th to 18th week of pregnancy with an elevated maternal alpha-fetoprotein, a glycoprotein synthesized by the fetus and which crosses the placenta. Neural tube defects such as anencephaly and spina bifida, are significant health problems. Management of neural tube defects diagnosed during the pregnancy requires a multidisciplinary approach. Psychological support, medical care and financial assistance have to be accessible and coordinated.
