Experts explore emerging information technologies' effects on medicine

Article Abstract:

Information technology will have a tremendous impact on medicine, fostering easy access to patient records, consultation between physicians, and patient and physician education. In Vermont, there are plans to expand a database of patient records that saves health care costs by improving efficiency and eliminating unnecessary medical procedures. Information technology can allow rural physicians to consult with other professionals and obtain relevant information on current research. Telecommunications thus fosters cooperation and life long education among doctors. Patients also use information technology to educate themselves about their illnesses, which ultimately improves the quality and efficiency of health care. Such patients may be better able to care for themselves, participate in treatment decisions, and use services appropriately.

Basic science focus of Third International Symposium on Liver Cancer and Hepatitis

Article Abstract:

The third Shanghai International Symposium on Liver Cancer and Hepatitis in 1996 highlighted more than 400 studies, most from China. China contains more than 40% of the patients worldwide who have liver cancer. Surgery is the best treatment but 80% of patients do not qualify because their tumors cannot be successfully removed surgically. However, drugs that reduce the size of the tumor so it can be resected have increased survival rates. Interleukin-2 and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells have also improved survival rates. Research continues on monoclonal antibodies and antisense DNA targeted against the ras oncogene.
