Article Abstract:
The 1991 Gamgee Lecture covered the decision by the EC to make 1992 the European Year of Safety, Hygiene and Health Protection at Work. Progress into the health and safety of workers has been boosted by the enforcement of the Single European Act in 1987. Various directives have now been proposed and some adopted, of which a list is included.

Article Abstract:
Occupational health and safety practitioners (OHASPs) are to have standards and vocational qualifications developed by EDMC Management Consultants. The first phase of functional analysis is already underway and will be followed by workshops and conferences leading to the implementation of competence standards.
