Consequences of inadequate analgesia during painful procedures in children

Article Abstract:

Inadequate pain relief during painful medical procedures may sensitize young children to feel more pain even when analgesics are adequate for subsequent procedures. Researchers gave 13 children either oral fentanyl or a placebo for pain control during bone marrow aspiration or lumbar puncture, then gave all the children fentanyl for a second procedure. Among children under 8 years old, those who experienced pain during the first procedure reported more pain in the second procedure, when a pain-relieving drug was given.

Consequences of Incomplete Carbohydrate Absorption From Fruit Juice Consumption in Infants

Article Abstract:

Fruit juice that has high amounts of sorbitol may cause carbohydrate malabsorption in young children. Sorbitol is a natural sugar found in many fruits. In a study of 14 healthy babies, 7 were fed pear juice and 7 were fed white grape juice. Pear juice contains sorbitol but white grape juice does not. Five of the 7 babies who drank pear juice developed carbohydrate malabsorption, compared with only two of the babies who drank white grape juice. Babies who drank pear juice also were more active physically.
