Corticosteroid Therapy in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether corticosteroids are beneficial in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is a serious form of lung failure with mortality rates ranging from 35% to 65% of affected patients. A 1998 study found that high-dose and prolonged methylprednisolone therapy substantially reduced mortality rates in ARDS patients. However, the study was small and may have had design flaws.

Acute renal failure in critically ill patients: A multinational, multicenter study

Article Abstract:

The first large international investigation of the epidemiology and outcome of acute renal failure (ARF) in critically ill patients is presented. The period prevalence of ARF in intensive care unit patients in multiple countries is determined and the impact of the differences in etiology, illness severity, and clinical practice is characterized.
