Corticosteroid therapy for prevention of respiratory distress syndrome in severe preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Corticosteroids appear to be beneficial in preventing respiratory distress in fetuses of women with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, swelling, and mild kidney disease. Researchers randomly assigned 218 pregnant women with preeclampsia to receive intramuscular injections of betamethasone or a placebo once a week. Betamethasone reduced the rate of respiratory distress by 50% and also lowered the risk of other complications such as intraventricular hemorrhage, patent ductus arteriosus, and perinatal infection. The neonatal mortality rate was also half the rate in the placebo group.

Collaborative trial of prenatal thyrotropin-releasing hormone and corticosteroids for prevention of respiratory distress syndrome

Article Abstract:

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone does not appear to be beneficial when combined with corticosteroids in the treatment of premature infants. These infants are more likely to develop respiratory distress syndrome and thyrotropin-releasing hormone might prevent this by helping the lungs mature. Researchers randomly assigned 370 pregnant women at risk of premature delivery to receive corticosteroids plus thyrotropin-releasing hormone or placebo. After delivery, there were no differences in infant outcome between the two groups.
