Cost sharing in health insurance - a reexamination

Article Abstract:

Cost sharing to prevent overconsumption of health services may discourage people on low incomes from seeking needed health care. Insurers are requiring their policyholders to pay for a certain part of their health care bills to increase patients' awareness of the cost of services. However, research has shown that people without adequate insurance may not seek health care because they cannot afford the burden of cost sharing. Women without insurance to supplement Medicare get fewer screening mammograms for breast cancer than women with supplemental insurance. High prices and doctors' fees, administrative costs, and overcapacity and underutilization may be the real contributors to high health care costs in America. Dealing with these factors may lower health care expenditures better than cost sharing does.

High tech at low cost

Article Abstract:

Computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment are expensive and require stable power supply and operating conditions. High technology is enabling the production of newer, more durable and less expensive CT-scan and MRI machines than can operate in harsher environments.
