Article Abstract:

The high rate of retail staff turnover often means health and safety training is overlooked in some large retail outlets. Selfridges in London prefers to employ mainly fit, young people who work for the shop on a short employment contract. Retail staff must be taught how to handle violent situations, often arising from apprehending or tackling shoplifters. Retail staff can help reduce the risk of serious accidents happening to shoppers by being vigilant and having an understanding of health and safety issues.

Health promotion

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning health promotion in the workplace are discussed. This work is usually undertaken by occupational health nurses, but some large firms use health promotion specialists. The abolition of the Health Education Authority means that public health promotion is now the responsibility of some new public sector organizations and a growing number of voluntary sector bodies.

Divided by our common directives?

Article Abstract:

Ever since the first European Directives, there have been wide variations in health and safety inspection standards between European Union countries. The changing role of labour inspection is a result of an enforced study of their processes, activities and structures. Among the industries regarded as needing clearer guidelines are shipping, farming and construction.
