Culture and consent

Article Abstract:

Nurses are often involved in the process of obtaining patient consent for operations as witnesses to the consent document. Nurses should consult with physicians to obtain any missing information. To obtain informed consent from an increasingly multicultural patient population, nurses need to be sensitive to cultural values. In-house translators, using translators provided by AT&T, and obtaining help from chaplains can assure nurses communicate accurately with patients about culturally sensitive information.

Telepresence: what is it?

Article Abstract:

Telepresence allows a surgeon to operate while not physically present in the operating room. A feedback control system is used to combine touch sensitivity and video images so the telepresence surgeon sees and feels what is happening at the remote location while guiding the human operator. Telepresence also offers the opportunity to treat battlefield casualties or treat patients in remote hospitals. This technological innovation will not displace nurses, who will still be needed to monitor patients.

The operating room of the future

Article Abstract:

The operating rooms of the future will emphasize outpatient settings, bloodless procedures, and technology. Radiologists and computer technicians will be given greater responsibility in operating rooms and alternative medicine such as acupuncture and aromatherapy may become more mainstream. The operating room and operations of the future will continue to depend upon nurses for patient care.
