Decreased epinephrine responses to hypoglycemia during sleep

Article Abstract:

Sleep appears to reduce the autonomic nervous system response to hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Researchers measured blood levels of epinephrine in 8 teenagers with type 1 diabetes and 6 healthy teenagers while they were awake during the day, awake during the night, and asleep during the night. Insulin was used to make the children hypoglycemic before the blood samples were taken. In both groups of children, epinephrine levels were much lower while they were asleep than at other times. In healthy children, glucagon can raise blood sugar, but this response is damaged in diabetic children.

Cellular responses to interferons and other cytokines: the JAK-STAT paradigm

Article Abstract:

Research on interferon begun in the 1970's may be providing clues to intracellular signaling mechanisms that could have significant therapeutic value. Interferon is an immune system protein that can activate genes within cells. Researchers have identified intracellular signaling proteins such as signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) and Janus kinases (JAK), activated by cellular binding with interferon, that regulate gene activity. This pathway could be an important therapeutic target in cancer and genetic diseases, and useful in improving the action of interferon.

The view from the other side - patients, doctors, and the power of a camera

Article Abstract:

An assistant professor of medicine describes his experience while carrying out an experiment of recording their day-to-day experience. The aim was to explore the smallest details that make up a life of a person on wheelchair that could reveal a world rarely seen by most enabled persons.
