Depression research strides may help prevent suicides

Article Abstract:

Doctors doing mental health research have found biological factors that may predispose certain depressed people to commit suicide. An underlying serotonin dysfunction may explain the discrepancy between the propensities of variously depressed people to either reject or accept the suicide impulse. Almost all suicide victims have in common abnormally reduced serotonin function. If biological links to suicide can be established, high-risk patients could be warned, and their potential suicides prevented, before the triggerings of abnormal chemistry put them at substantial risk.

Equality 'breakthrough.' (neurosurgery professor Gerald Silverberg censored for sexist behavior)

Article Abstract:

Stanford University confirmed that although Gerald Silverberg will be replaced as acting neurosurgery chairman, he may reapply for the position after participating in 'gender sensitivity' programs. Silverberg was accused of engaging in behavior that demeaned women just before he was to become permanent neurosurgery chairman in the spring of 1991. In a Mar 1992 statement, Silverberg acknowledged that others found his behavior offensive, and agreed to participate in 'gender sensitivity' training.

Scientists tell of harassment by activists

Article Abstract:

The AMA held the first of a series of workshops in Apr 1992 designed to help physicians counter the campaigns of animal rights activists. Most workshop participants agreed that animals could never be entirely eliminated from biomedical research, and that the activists' attacks threaten scientific research and medical progress. They discussed common strategies employed by the activists, and how physicians can fight back. Meanwhile, about 20 animal rights activists protested nearby.
