Designs for healing

Article Abstract:

The design and structure of hospitals can affect the patient's comfort and healing process. Many hospitals are poorly designed, with intrusive nurses' stations, decentralized services and lack of privacy for patients. The Plantree model of hospital design, however, uses softer lighting, onsite food preparation and more privacy to create a healing environment. Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, is spending $580 million to build a new hospital with flexible design and a sophisticated patient traffic control system. The hospital is scheduled to open in Jan 1999.

Tax deadline looming for hospital, physician insiders

Article Abstract:

December 15, 1996, is the due date for tax penalties imposed upon non-profit benefit transactions made by hospitals from September 14, 1995, onward. The taxes are part of the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) enforcement of the 1996 "Taxpayer Bill of Rights 2," legislation which gives the IRS new power to penalize insiders receiving excessive benefits from tax-exempt medical organizations. The bill allows a grace period for rebuttal, but confusion about specific liability may compromise some tax returns.

Re-inventing the hospital

Article Abstract:

The American Hospital Assn (AHA) has substituted the term 'community care network' for 'hospital' in its mission statement. But the high-minded rhetoric is a reaction to hospitals' declining market dominance, charge critics, adding that talk about integrated networks is exaggerated. Half of all community hospitals will remain independent because they are rural. And the most economic networks are proving to be those that are loosely affiliated.
