Determinants of HIV seroprevalence rates among sites participating in a community-based study of drug users

Article Abstract:

Various behaviors can identify those at risk of being HIV-positive. Researchers used a national survey to study the behavioral characteristics of 4,595 intravenous drug users (IDUs), 4,187 crack smokers and 2,203 IDUs who also smoked crack. Among IDUs, the risk of HIV-positivity was associated with race, sex, frequency of injection and geographic location. Among crack smokers, risk factors included exchanging sex for money, number of sex partners and geographic location. Six of the seven cities with the highest HIV infection rates and two of the three with moderate rates were in the Eastern US.

Estimated HIV risk among Hispanics in a national sample of drug users

Article Abstract:

Puerto Ricans appear to have the highest risk of HIV infection among Hispanic drug users. This was the conclusion of a study which interviewed 3,660 Hispanic injection drug users. Based on various behaviors known to be high risk for HIV transmission, Puerto Ricans were estimated to have the highest risk. It is not clear whether economic, social or cultural factors account for this increased risk.

Partner concordance in reports of joint risk behaviors

Article Abstract:

Many HIV patients may be unwilling to identify sex partners and drug use partners. This makes it difficult for public health workers to trace contacts and may also distort epidemiological estimates that are used to determine public policy.
