Determinants of dengue 2 infections among residents of charters towers, Queensland, Australia

Article Abstract:

Researchers evaluated a study group of 797 persons for exposure to dengue fever. Logistic regression analysis identified a case of dengue fever within two residential blocks, house screening, the presence of a water tank within two residential blocks, and the use of knockdown insecticide. Classification and Regression Tree further identified 152 individuals in whom the prevalence of dengue infection was 50%. In order to control the spread of dengue, use of house screening and the removal of mosquito breeding sites are important.

Group A Streptococcus carriage among close contacts of patients with invasive infections

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the prevalence of carriage of the same A Streptococcus strain among contact of patients with invasive infections and assessment of exposure duration showed that all close contact who spend 12-24 hours with the patient were rarely colonized with A Streptococcus. If a antibiotic prophylaxis is used it should probably be aimed at people who spend at least 24 hours with the infected patient during the week preceding the onset of the illness.

Infections and atherosclerosis: new clues from an old hypothesis?

Article Abstract:

More than one hundred years of research suggests a potential role of infections in atherosclerosis disease. Experimental and animal studies with B. typhosus, streptococci, and other agents conducted have similar results to those with CMV and C . pneumonia. Some of these diseases directly infect the endothelium and could be atherogenic because of their systemic effects.
