Determination of interstitial collagenase (MMP-1) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

The level of a protein substance in joint fluid known as MMP-1 may not be useful as an indicator of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) activity in the body, but it may be useful in indicating how much fluid inflammation there is in a specific joint. Researchers measured the amount of MMP-1 in joint fluid and blood samples from 41 patients with RA and found that MMP-1 levels did not reflect C reactive protein or MMP-1 levels in blood. MMP-1 levels in joint fluid did, however, correspond to the amount of joint fluid inflammation. Neither MMP-1 levels nor MMP-1 activity corresponded with levels of the tissue inhibitor of MMP. The release of MMPs into joint fluid causes cartilage to deteriorate, as happens in advanced RA.
