Developing a nurse-led aural care clinic

Article Abstract:

North Staffordshire Hospital NHS Trust, England, introduced a nurse-led ear care clinic in an attempt to reduce out-patient waiting lists. The nurse trained by reading textbooks, observing consultants performing aural toilets and microsuction, then performing these procedures under observation. The hospital went on to offer two nurse-led aural care clinics per week at the same time as a consultant-led clinic. The nurse treated 132 patients in 370 consultations over the first eight months of the clinic. Over 99% of the patients expressed satisfaction with their treatment.

Satisfaction guaranteed

Article Abstract:

A survey in Leeds, England, revealed that patients with rheumatic diseases attending a nurse-led clinic showed more satisfaction with the care they had received than similar patients attending a consultant's clinic. Patients in each clinic completed a satisfaction questionnaire before and after a series of six consultations. The patients in the nurse-led group showed more increased satisfaction in all areas, most notably a 32% increase in satisfaction with access and care over the period, compared with a 7% increase in the other group.

An exploration of the value of specialist neurosurgical nurses

Article Abstract:

A study revealed that specialist neurosurgical nurses had more practice knowledge concerning the care of a neurosurgical patient than other expert nurses and general nurses. The researchers constructed a case study concerning a patient as he passed from admission to discharge. Seventy-five nurses gave their responses to four situations concerning this patient. Specialist neurosurgical nurses were more able to identify problems and choose appropriate nursing responses, indicating that patient safety is improved with specialist nursing.
