Development of autoantibodies before the clinical onset of systemic lupus erythematosus

Article Abstract:

Many people who develop systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may have autoantibodies in their blood years before they develop symptoms, according to a study of 130 patients and 130 healthy volunteers. All were members of the Armed Forces and had given blood years before. Eighty-eight percent of the SLE patients had autoantibodies in blood samples that were taken up to nine years earlier. Only 4% of the healthy volunteers had blood samples that tested positive for autoantibodies.

Autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus -- there before you know it

Article Abstract:

People who eventually develop systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may have autoantibodies characteristic of the disease long before they actually develop symptoms. However, it would not be cost-effective to test everyone for SLE autoantibodies. Many people with these autoantibodies would never develop SLE and there is no treatment that can prevent SLE from developing even in people who have autoantibodies.

Early events in lupus humoral autoimmunity suggest initiation through molecular mimicry

Article Abstract:

The autoantibody response in human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is traced to identify the environmental agents that could potentially incite autoimmunity. The data from the research support the hypothesis that some humoral autoimmunity in human lupus arises through molecular mimicry between Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 and lupus autoantigens.
