Differences in Preferences for Neonatal Outcomes Among Health Care Professionals, Parents, and Adolescents

Article Abstract:

Parents of extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants appear to have different attitudes toward the child's outcome than doctors and other health care professionals. Researchers asked 203 doctors and nurses who worked in neonatal intensive care units, 264 teenagers and 275 parents how they would feel if they had to live in each of five different states of health for most of their lives. The health states ranged from fairly normal to severely handicapped. The doctors were more likely than parents to rate one or more health states as being worse than death.

Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases have a substantial impact on quality of life. They are the leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting 43 million persons in 1998 and costing $65 billion in medical care and lost productivity. A survey of 32,322 people in 11 states found that those with arthritis were three times more likely to say their health was only fair or poor compared to those without arthritis.
