Difficulties of filming interactions

Article Abstract:

One of the main difficulties encountered by researchers undertaking observations into patient/nurse relationships using a video camera is the normal response to nursing situations, which can impinge on the natural chemistry taking place between the two people being observed. Becoming involved in a medical situation will take away the researchers impartiality, throwing doubt on evidence collated by the camera. Using the camera to focus on the body language and chemistry between patient and nurse can be a carried out with minimum of reactivity, although it will never be totally erased.

Forging new roles: professional and practice development are tagged on to new nursing posts, but what do these terms really mean?

Article Abstract:

Professional and practice development are terms being attached to new nursing posts and the UKCC has emphasized the need for patient-focused, ongoing and professional and practice development. The professional development roles of nurses may, or may not, incorporate the practice development component. Nurses often lack the time for professional and practice development, but some have been able to combine them with professional education or research supervision. The results of a pilot survey looking at how practice and professional development nurses view their roles, is presented.

Sense of direction

Article Abstract:

In the UK, the Royal Marsden NHS Trust has prepared a plan for promoting patient-focused care. To carry out the plan, the Trust is listening to patients' experiences in order to restructure the services it offers, while staff will be provided with information, education and training to help them provide patient-focused care strategies. A questionnaire will provide the Trust with the necessary information to improve patient care techniques.
