Dimensions and indicators of patients' perceived nursing care quality in the hospital setting

Article Abstract:

There needs to be a standard instrument of patients' satisfaction with nursing care, similar to the patient satisfaction with hospital care instruments, to be the indicator of nursing care quality. Changes in the health-care business have resulted in reduced nursing staff and similar changes that could impact patient safety and care quality. However, until some way of measuring patient satisfaction is designed, impacts cannot be determined. A standard instrument could provide feedback to both the professional and non-professional nursing staff.

Elements for a report card: one institution's experience moving from theory to trial

Article Abstract:

There is a need to develop an instrument for tracking the quality of nursing care. The University of Michigan Health System is working on developing such an instrument based on the Nursing Minimum Data Set. The goals for this instrument are that the information is standardized and is understandable to the general public, the profession and legislators. The most difficult step is to develop standardized definitions and language, requiring a clarity of purpose. The experience of the University is described.
