Diptheria: a changing pattern

Article Abstract:

Incidences of diptheria have been rising internationally in recent years up to 1997 in developed countries, including Europe, and the disease is widespread in parts of South America, the Tropics, Vietnam, Africa and Bangladesh. The disease has spread mainly as a result of fewer vaccinations in children, greater mobility and a decline in immunity in adults. It is important that immunisation be used in the fight against the increase in such diseases.

Is everybody doing it?

Article Abstract:

Patients and carers could be protected from contracting infection in hospital if universal precautions were taken. Research indicates, however, that staff do not protect themselves adequately and that most medical professionals are not committed to the principles of universal precautions. There is also insufficient study of infection control in the curriculum of student nurses.

Now, wash your hands please

Article Abstract:

An audit of infection control at the UK Southmead Health Services NHS (National Health Service) Trust indicated that precautions for patients in isolation are not being followed. The majority of recommendations put forward as a result of the audit can easily be carried out, and some, such as medical education and proposals for basic care, have already been put into practice.
